The Dreamlands is by no means an easy place to reach, but it indeed can be traveled to, and what one finds inside can boggle the mind. The chaotic realm bubbles with the dreams of an infinite number of slumbering mortals, each one creating a fantastical–if short-lived–realm based upon all they see in their subconscious mind before quickly fading away. Like droplets of rain forming a lake, so too do these bubbles of dreams form a vast ocean through which many unusual natives of the unusual plane swim. If one dives down too deeply, past the familiar but surreal, they find there is indeed a bottom to this great ocean, though the bottom of this sea is the top of a world vastly more alien and hostile.
The Plateau of Leng is but one such vista of this realm of madness and wonder, rising like a dark tower over the Dreamlands, a world in its own right built upon the ruins of nightmares imagined before time began. However, existing so close to the dreams of the Great Beyond, the beings of Leng have shapes familiar, if distorted. The Denizens of Leng have humanoid body plans, the Bholes simplistic creatures resembling life found all over the cosmos, and even the Leng Spiders have a shape mortals can recognize… But therein lays something fascinating and, perhaps, worrying.
Leng Spiders are among the most ancient of beings in the Dreamlands, driven to the fringes by the explosion of more humanoid races within their ancestral home. Their bodies have not changed since the advent of mortalkind, a fact hidden from many through ignorance and an unwillingness to interact with the massive arachnids, suggesting that perhaps when the Gods were populating the cosmos with life, they took inspiration in its many creatures found elsewhere. Two more credits to this theory exists in the Great Old One Atlach-Nacha, a more “modern” spider beast who has undoubtedly come from a past cycle, and the Qlippoth-turned-Demon Mazmezz, herself a nightmarish tangle of legs whose life predates the creation of mortalkind, both of their shapes suggesting that their appearance inspired the creation of spiders, rather than the other way around.
But if you find yourself asking “what inspired them?” you have taken your first step upon a web woven eons before Pharasma opened her eyes to the potential of the Great Beyond. Step further, and you risk attracting what made it.
Oh, my decision? Well, I-I think we’ve seen how effective my decisions have been. Let’s re-cap. I lead a band of plundering vandals to the greatest archaeological find in recorded history, thus enabling the kidnap and/or murder of the royal family, not to mention personally delivering the most powerful force known to man into the hands of a mercenary nutcase who’s probably gonna sell it to the Kaiser! Have I left anything out? Well, you did set the camp on fire and drop us down that big hole. Thank you! Thank you very much.
